Freight invoices are full of acronyms. Here is what the ones that actually change your price mean.
Freight cost is calculated from the chargeable weight of your shipment, the trade lane, and the service type. First work out the volume (CBM) of your cargo: length × width × height in metres. Then convert that to volumetric weight using the divisor for your mode — 1 CBM = 1000 kg for sea freight, 1 CBM = 167 kg for air freight, and 1 CBM = 200 kg for courier. The carrier charges on whichever is greater: gross weight or volumetric weight. Multiply that chargeable weight by the lane rate and add surcharges such as THC, BAF and customs clearance. The Freight Calculator app does all of this instantly and returns a bookable quote.
CBM stands for cubic metre and is the standard volume unit in freight. You calculate it as length × width × height, with all dimensions in metres. For example a carton measuring 120 cm × 100 cm × 80 cm is 1.2 × 1.0 × 0.8 = 0.96 CBM. Multiply by the number of cartons for the total shipment volume. CBM determines your LCL ocean freight cost and how many cartons fit inside a 20ft or 40ft container.
Chargeable weight is the figure the carrier actually bills you on. It is the greater of your shipment's gross (actual) weight and its volumetric (dimensional) weight. Light but bulky cargo — pillows, plastic housings, furniture — is billed on volume, while dense cargo such as machinery or tiles is billed on actual weight. Getting chargeable weight right before you book is the single biggest cause of surprise freight invoices.
FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire container — typically a 20ft, 40ft or 40ft High Cube — and pay a flat rate for the box regardless of how full it is. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers and you pay per CBM or per 1000 kg, whichever is greater. As a rule of thumb, once a shipment passes roughly 13–15 CBM, FCL in a 20ft container usually becomes cheaper than LCL.
A standard 20ft container holds about 33 CBM of internal volume with a usable loading capacity of roughly 25–28 CBM. A 40ft standard container holds about 67 CBM with a usable capacity of around 55–58 CBM, and a 40ft High Cube holds about 76 CBM with roughly 62–66 CBM usable. Usable capacity is always lower than internal volume because of pallet footprints, stacking limits and dunnage.
